Our brain injury specialists
About Barratts Solicitors
Barratts Solicitors succeed where others don’t. We are different from most firms in the UK – we have remained as a small and highly specialised practice, representing families where a loved one has suffered a brain injury, either through personal injury, criminal assault or clinical negligence.
Barratts also offers services to those clients who also need further assistance through the Court of Protection or Special Educational Needs advice.
We only employ experienced lawyers to handle cases. This means that clients are always seen by a lawyer who knows about brain injury and has successfully pursued these cases over many years. Our ethos has always been to guarantee a dedicated, experienced lawyer for every client with time to do the work to the highest standards.
We are experienced in dealing in all aspects of injury claims, including complex brain injury and spinal cases at all levels, from the minor to the very severe. We have close links with medical practitioners, case managers and other brain injury professionals to ensure the best quality of rehabilitation and expert evidence in the East Midlands area and beyond. Whilst Barratts Solicitors are based in Nottingham our reputation for excellence attracts clients from all across the UK.
Bringing a claim following injury can be very stressful, and we strive to make the process as easy as we can for you. Praised for our approachable and caring attitude, we work with clients on a national basis, visiting them in their home environment whenever required.
We are recognised amongst the leading firms in the Midlands in respect of personal injury and clinical negligence by the independently researched legal directories, Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners.
Barratts’ continued top tier ranking in the independent legal guides confirms their status as the leading firm to turn to for all. Whilst many firms are now beholden to shareholders or have become large corporations, Barratts’ ethos continues as strongly as ever – to ensure that its lawyers have the time and experience to offer clients practical and informed advice; this means clients always have someone at the end of a phone who knows about their case and Barratts personally deliver results without clients having to deal with a large team of people.
About Barratts Solicitor’s Personal Injury department
Barratts’ Solicitors have a pre-eminent reputation in personal injury law and are recognised as experts in brain injury and spinal cord injury. Partners David Tomlinson and Ed Myers receive referrals from individuals and professionals on a national basis.
Ed and David both receive regular referrals from individuals with acquired brain injury (ABI) and their families. Ed has been awarded the APIL specialist quality mark for handling Brain Injury cases.
Each of Barratts’ personal injury solicitors is specialised in handling cases regarding complex injuries. Ed is one of the few solicitors nationally to have been accorded both “specialist Spinal Cord Injury Solicitor” and Brain Injury by APIL. We continue to be one of the few firms accepted onto the Spinal Injuries Association Solicitor Directory.
Barratts have also received referrals from individual doctors working in the field of spinal injuries, from barristers and, on occasions, judges, who recognise our expertise in personal injury law.
The Personal Injury team continue to advice in cases involving multi-jurisdiction and complex legal issues and have seen increasing numbers of CICA cases, usually personally recommended. Their approach is to impartially consider if their advice will add value to more complex CICA applications, securing significant increases for clients with no previous legal support.
Barratts also act for families in fatal cases with representation at Inquests.
All the PI team have handled Motor Insurer Bureau claims which continue to be complex and require senior involvement. David Tomlinson has successfully appealed an MIB decision which refused to compensate a cyclist with severe brain injuries.
The Department are recognised as true experts by Chambers and Legal 500. Their proactive approach and close involvement in rehabilitation is also recognised by other professionals who continue to recommend Barratts.
Ed Myers is Chair of Trustees of Headway Nottingham.
Barratts have prioritised acting for clients with life changing injuries for the last 30 years. This decision has set them apart from competitors and firms who now lack the expertise to move from lower value cases to handling complex work.
About Barratts Solicitor’s Clinical Negligence department
We are delighted to be consistently placed in the top tier of both Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners.
We act on behalf of many patients who have suffered injury as a result of negligent medical treatment, including children with complex injuries sustained during labour and/or delivery such as cerebral palsy, which can often lead to permanent disability.
Our Clinical Negligence Team has extensive experience working with clients and their families in circumstances involving severe injuries and we do our best to pursue your legal claim with the utmost sensitivity and expertise.
Our brain injury expertise remains at the forefront of our clinical negligence work and Barratts have a Legal Aid Clinical Negligence franchise for neurological brain injuries acquired at birth. This depth of experience is essential when assessing such cases.
The Clinical Negligence Team advise upon and handle complex high value spinal injury claims, often involving delayed or missed diagnosis of cauda equina/spinal haematoma/spinal abscess. The effects of spinal injury are devastating for clients. We are also included as experts in this area by AvMA and APIL.
Our 3 Clinical Negligence Partners are all Law Society clinical negligence panel members which puts us ahead of any competitors. Both Julie Hardy and Emma Zukowska are accorded Specialist Clinical Negligence status by APIL; Emma and Julie are also recognised Child Injury Compensation Lawyers by APlL. Both Julie and Alison Brooks are AvMA Panel Members.
Barratts’ Clinical Negligence work extends beyond brain injury and spinal Injury cases to include complex injury or fatalities from surgery, surgical errors and GP misdiagnosis. We are often involved in representation at Inquests for clients. The expertise of the 3 Law Society Panel members in every case ensures we can identify issues from the start and improves our analysis of cases.
