The charity behind Road Safety Week is asking all road users – drivers, passengers, pedestrians, cyclists – to ‘Make the pledge’ to change
Whether you’re a driver, a passenger in a car, a pedestrian or a cyclist, how YOU behave on and around roads affects not only your own safety, but the safety of everyone else using the roads.
And the 2016 Road Safety Week campaign invites ALL road users to ‘Make the pledge’ to change just one element of their behaviour to make roads safer.
What are these elements?
Slow down on bends and in bad weather, and stay under the speed limit around schools and communities – speed is a factor in more than one in four fatal crashes in Great Britain.
Stay sober and keep free of alcohol and drugs. One drink can affect your reaction and perception even if you’re still under the limit.
Seatbelts and properly fitted child seats do their job remarkably well! And a looked-after car is a much safer car – get into the habit of doing routine checks on tyre pressures and brakes.
Talking and texting are complex tasks that take the attention away from what drivers should be focused on. Don’t do it.
Get your eyesight checked regularly, don’t drive if you’re especially tired or stressed because your concentration will falter massively.
Keep your driving to a minimum to improve road safety, your health and the environment.
The Brain Injury Group and its member firms are once again working with primary schools across the country to engage as many children as we can in discussions and activities that promote road safety. We’ll be asking the children to make the pledge and tell us what they’re going to do to make the roads safer. And we’ll get them to ask their ‘designated drivers’ what they can do too.
As an additional teaching aid The Childrens Trust generously provided a supply of its award-winning book, ‘Heads up, Tim-Tron’, which is designed to explain brain injury to young people. Each participating school has received a book for every class.
As the campaign builds we’ll include details of the schools and the firms involved on this page, and we’ll create another gallery of images that prove quite how much imagination you can and how much fun you can have when learning a valuable lesson.
