Back in 2011, when Brain Injury Group was formed, a small charity called Brain Injury is BIG was also starting on its journey, supporting families who have a loved one who has suffered a life changing brain injury.
The founding members of Brain Injury is BIG – Anne, Judy, Lois, Lynne and Sue – affectionately known to us as the ‘BIG Ladies’, soon become firm friends and we’ve been proud to support their charity, via our annual golf day, since 2013.
The BIG Ladies met when their husbands or sons were each receiving treatment on the Devonshire Ward of the Royal Hospital for Neuro-Disability in Putney, following catastrophic brain injuries. Using their personal experience of the emotional, physical and financial impact of a loved one suffering a brain injury, they set up the charity to support others who find themselves in this situation. Their personal stories all feature on their website and are well worth a read.
Support is available via their telephone support line whether you want advice or just someone to listen to you, the line is open from 9 am until 9 pm – 01483 770999. They also have an online forum where you can share your story or ask questions.
In addition, the charity has set up a grant scheme where individuals, or residential care homes, may apply for small grants.
For individuals, grants of up to £500 are available to assist with the cost of specialist equipment, therapies and assessments or to help with travel and accommodation costs which are not available via public funding.
For care homes who ordinarily care for severely brain injured residents, grants are available of up to £5,000 to cover the cost of specialist equipment -this has included in recent years the donation of eye gaze machines.
At a time when life is thrown up into the air following brain injury and finances can be severely impacted, especially if the main breadwinner is the person who suffered the brain injury, the small grants scheme is available to make life slightly easier.
Full details of the scheme and the criteria for applying are available on their website www.braininjuryisbig.org.uk/help-from-us/ or contact Brain Injury Group to be put in touch.
For the last 9 years, Brain Injury Group have fund raised for Brain Injury is BIG, via our annual charity golf day, raising in excess of £20,000 for the charity to help fund their small grants scheme.
