A study of American football players has shown they are four times more likely to suffer from Alzheimer’s in later life than other people.

US scientists reviewed almost 3,500 retired NFL players to determine their risk of certain brain-related diseases and of the 334 whose death certificates they viewed, seven had died from Alzheimer’s disease. Although this study is small, Alzheimer’s Research UK believes it shows head injury could be a risk factor in the disease and would like to see more research into this aspect.
